New Baby Quilts

Shifra has a new grandson so she quickly made this soft cuddly quilt for the new baby.  Someone in the family saw it and has requested one too, so she is now starting another.  Many of the ladies in our group have been having new grandchildren so we are busy, busy, busy.

Susan is in Houston waiting for a new arrival.  She took this finished baby quilt with her for her new grandchild. Susan's daughter in Israel had a baby boy just before Susan left for Houston.  What a busy time for Susan.
Mazel Tov to you both.

April Get-together

This week we had many things going on.  I continued to work on my Apple Core.  Renee B is starting a Tumbling Block wall hanging and a new member, Shoshana L is starting a 4Patch for a pillow.  Sara is working on her Grandmothers Flower Garden.  Everyone is helping each other which is so heart warming.  We all share patterns, fabric and advice when necessary.

Sara has had several family photo pillows made.  With this latest photo she decided to make it herself and she was so happy with the results.

Renee S made a tote bag and has plans for making more. It was the pattern that was shown here before and very small.  So Renee just enlarged it for her needs.  Everyone is so talented.

Avigail put her 4 sections together for her 1st pillow.  It should be finished soon.  She received some advise on how to make the back so she can remove the pillow form for washing.

Quilt Panel

When I went to the Pissott quilt show I bought this panel.
Someone else that bought this quilt panel made it into a lovely quick quilt.  Sometimes we have to make something fast, easy and it will have to take a lot of abuse.  Do we want to spend loads of time on this type of quilt? I find that anything that is handmade is appreciated and many people have no understanding about the work that is put into our quilts. I hope to make something similar with my new quilt panel.

Betar Illit

When I enter or leave Betar Illit this is the view that I see.  The flowers are so inviting that I always want to hurry back.

April Get-together

Naomi made a lovely book cover.  She didn't have any instructions on this, so this is what she came up with.  She did a great job and enjoyed trying to figure this out by herself.

Avigail started this pillow some months ago and just got back to it now. She wants to get it finished so she is working on it again. This was her first attempt at piecing.
Shifra started a new quilt and brought her squares for the ladies to see.  This pattern was on About.com Quilting.  It's called Hopscotch Baby Quilt and this quilt will have borders added to make it a bit larger.

I started this simple pattern a long time ago.  I had cut out 6 1/2" squares that sat for a long time.  I wanted to make something using white so this week I decided to put this together. It isn't finished yet because I still have to decide on the borders.

Meanwhile Susan was making the same thing this week and posted it on her blog.

Esther's New Book

A dear friend of ours, that is not a quilter yet, has written a wonderful little booklet.
It's called Recovering From Abuse-A Biblical Perspective. She has worked on this for sometime and I find it to be an inspirational text.  Mazel Tov Esther on this first of many books.

After Pesach (Passover) Get-together

We are back in business!
After several weeks of no quilting we were able to get together this morning.
Everyone was so happy to see each other and to start working on our projects again.

Susan brought her latest quilt to hand stitch the binding.  She explained how to do Prairie Points for those who never saw this before.

Sara is working on a new baby quilt.  Of course, she doesn't know if it's a boy or girl, so she is sticking to basic yellows and greens. Sara is using the Broken Dishes pattern.  This pattern is wonderful so matter what fabrics you use.
Sara also wants to start a quilt for her daughter Leah.  She brought along her fabrics for us to discuss.  We all enjoy putting our two cents into what should be done. We will have to wait to see the final product. Here is a sample of the fabrics being considered.

Naomi teaches some children how to sew.  She brought along some projects that she makes with the girls.  They are so cute. Such nice ideas to get children interested in sewing.

Murphy's Law of Quilting

During one of my husband's weaker moments in trying to cope with my quilting addiction, he composed the following thoughts that are reminiscent of Murphy's Laws.  Enjoy!

Any fabric cut to a specified length will be too short

Bobbin put in backwards will not enhance reverse stitching

Fingers do not make good pin cushions

Extra blocks should not indicate an inability to count

The final result of a quilt will always be what was planned

Never invite Rube Goldberg to your quilting group

Measurements are always in the least usable designations, ex: cubits, furlongs

My machine cannot find the ditch

My Pfaff parts arrived. Unfortunately, I have a Bernina

Asbestos does not make good batting

I recognize my fabric – I am a material witness

Working on a Rail Fence does not give you splinters

Quilter's husbands need support groups

Quilting insurance means having good coverage

Don’t drive and quilt at the same time (DWQ)

Ambidextrous quilters get done in half the time

"Many a true word is said in a jest."
We do try to keep each other in stitches.

Liberated String Quilts

Sara was kind enough to lend me a book that she recently purchased.  String quilts are a process of using your scrap fabric and wasting nothing.  Gwen Marston made most of the quilts in 1999 and published this book in 2003.  I always seem to be behind the times.  Last year I made my first and only string quilt.
Now in 2010, after reading this book and seeing the versatility of this type of quilt, I am anxious to make more.  Gwen goes into great detail about the history and turning scraps into beautiful quilts.   If you see her book, I think that you will agree and be enthused about what can be done with you srcaps.

Renee S tackles the Segway

What does a quilter do on vacation in Israel?  Well, our Renee, who is a mother of 9 and a grandmother of many more, goes for a ride on the Segway.  And she doesn't go alone.  She takes 2 of her daughters with her for the experience.  If only I had her energy.

Elm Creek Quilt Novels

I have just read two more of Jennifer Chiaverini books.  I can say that they continue to amaze and delight me.  If you haven't read any of  her books, you are missing out on a pleasant experience.

Pissott's Passover Quilt Show

Today was the long awaited quilt show at Pissott.  Several of our members were able to attend and we weren't disappointed.  Here are a few of the inspiring quilts that were shown.
